In its continuous drive to build and grow a solid knowledge and talent pool that will lead on the Qatari financial sector’s future evolution, the Qatar Finance and Business Academy (QFBA) has partnered with the Qatar Financial Centre Authority (QFCA) to launch Kawader, a bespoke learning initiative for entry-level graduates in the field. As part of this initiative,   an internship agreement has been launched with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group’s (MUFG) banking arm, The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd. , Six students will be based between London and Dubai for a four-week-long internship program starting Nov, 10th during which they will be introduced and exposed to the bank’s various departments across markets.

Designed as a competency-driven, innovative blended learning experience, Kawader builds and shapes the expertise, skillsets and knowledge of the financial services sector’s future business leaders and decision makers. As such, it endeavors to bridge the gap between industry and academia, providing young talents and professionals with a world-class development and training experience that is backed by an arsenal of internationally recognized professional certifications, personal development skills and guiding practices that enable them to build their career path in the financial sector and determine their future specializations and areas of expertise.

Commenting on the partnership Dr. Abdulaziz Al Horr, CEO at QFBA, said: “The industry is moving with remarkable pace and change that even veterans, professionals and decision makers continue to grapple with as they transition the sector into its next wave of growth. The next generation of professionals needs to lead on the financial sector’s evolution, rather than transition; and, in doing so, it must keep abreast with the demanding and continuously changing dynamics of both the financial job market and industry. Aligning with the Qatar National Vision 2030, the development and empowerment of solid human capital is an onus that we, among other established players and institutions operating in Qatar and the region, must carry to help young talents outpace the industry’s fast-moving dynamics, innovate and create new opportunities and arenas.”

He also added: “This is an undertaking that requires the collaboration and cooperation of all stakeholders involved, including the industry’s leading local institutions and players, international bodies and the young talents and professionals. Our partnership with MUFG in Dubai and London is proof of the success that such collaboration can achieve in bridging the gap between academia and professional ecosystems. It is also one of many initiatives we are undertaking in this direction.”

Mr. Iseda, Head of Doha Office, commented: “It is our honor to contribute to the ambition of Qatar National Vision 2030, through human capital development in finance industry. In fact, many talented and motivated students applied and joined the programme. I am also delighted to see those six interns are keen to learn a lot from the internship in our London and Dubai office. They are strongly encouraged to work hard under the overseas environment, because they are fully aware “I am representing State of Qatar in here.” Those experiences are only for them to keep forever.” Today, besides the partnership with MUFG in Dubai and London, Kawader Program sends interns to our partners form the financial industry in Doha such as: QFCA, QIA, QInvest, KPMG, Central Bank, PWC and Standard Chartered-Dubai.

QFBA operates around five Centers of Excellence (COE): public finance, Islamic finance, competency and training framework, customer management and innovative learning solutions. Recently, the academy partnered with regional HR powerhouse Adnar Group to bring Qatar its first Global Management Challenge (GMC), an international competition built and designed around simulation and strategybased training tools and models. The GMC follows QFBA’s launch of KAFA’A, a Training and Competency framework aimed at elevating Qatar’s financial sector talent pool, in a mandate by Qatar’s Financial Markets Development Committee (FMDC).

The Qatar Business Incubation Center (QBIC), founded by Qatar Development Bank (QDB) and Social Development Center (SDC), successfully concluded its 4th wave of the LeanStartup Program with entrepreneurs pitching to judges and investors during “Demo Day”.

The Demo Day marks the end of the 10-week long LeanStartup Program for 27 entrepreneurs in Qatar with 16 startup business ideas. For a period of two and a half months, the entrepreneurs tested the market viability of their intended product or service by talking to customers, partners and suppliers to validate their ideas. QBIC’s localized LeanStartup methodology uses the Business Model Canvas. This does not require a business plan, and instead uses a Customer Development Process that encourages a hands-on learning experience. It also utilizes Qatari startup business cases as challenging exercises, as opposed to theoretical business cases.

Throughout QBIC’s 4th Demo Day, entrepreneurs were, for the first time, able to pitch to be incubated in a specialized incubator, QBIC Tourism. The incubator was set up to enable entrepreneurs to develop products and services that enhance the Qatar tourism experience. QBIC Tourism, guided by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) provides entrepreneurs with the tools they need to turn their business idea into a successful tourism product or service.

Through QBIC Tourism, QTA will provide guidance to entrepreneurs to support them as they introduce creative business ideas to the market that enrich visitor experience across various areas, including: Business Events, Urban and Family Entertainment, Family Recreation and Sports Tourism, and Culture and Heritage Products. At the event, Qatar Development Bank CEO and QBIC Chairman Abdulaziz Bin Nasser Al Khalifa said: "We are very pleased with the success of the fourth wave of entrepreneurs who have completed our LeanStartup Program. Their achievements represent an encouraging trend, continuing from the success of the previous wave’s intake and demonstrating the strength of our unique program. He added: “We are proud of the high-level pilot projects that were exhibited, which reflect the drive and ambition of our young entrepreneurs, as they gear up to become part of Qatar’s wider national development.”

QBIC’s commitment and support of Qatari entrepreneurs lies not only in providing them with a physical space to operate, but also the knowledge to succeed. Support is offered in an integrated manner through our incubation model, to serve the entrepreneurs’ best interests in creating successful startups. He continued: “Qatar Development Bank champions entrepreneurship and the private sector, as we understand the significant role played by entrepreneurs in creating a diverse and knowledge-based economy. It is our duty to strengthen the efforts of local entrepreneurs and provide all means of support to assist their projects, recognising that through this we will be contributing to the wider development of Qatar."

During Demo Day, 27 entrepreneurs with the best-developed prototypes pitched their ideas to QBIC judges and potential investors, who then selected the best 14 pitches to be incubated at QBIC. The main selection criterion was based on each idea’s customer validation and traction attainment. The best startups covered a wide variety of industries. The 14 selected new startups will receive smart financing, coaching and mentoring, office space, and networking opportunities from QBIC.

The XX new QBIC incubatees are expected to complete a three-month milestone upon which their progress is evaluated to ensure they are fulfilling requirements to undergo a successful launch. This includes undertaking a follow-up customer validation assessment.  The entrepreneurs who convinced the judging panel at the Demo Day of their business ideas are now set to become QBIC incubatees. Aysha Al Mudahka QBIC CEO said: “We are very excited that 16 business ideas made it as far as the Demo Day after 10 weeks in the LeanStartup Program, and would like to congratulate those who have been incubated and are now officially part of the QBIC family. With dedication, hard work, and action-oriented coaching from QBIC, we hope to be part of their journey towards becoming the next QAR 100 million companies in Qatar.”

Mohamed Al-Mahmeed, head of Tourism Investment Promotion at QTA commented: “We’re pleased to be partnering with QBIC in providing a specialized tourism incubator to our local talents. The involvement of homegrown talent in developing Qatar’s tourism sector is crucial to ensuring that visitor experiences are embedded in, and reflective of, the country’s national culture and heritage. Through this incubator, we are looking forward to working with Qatar’s brightest entrepreneurs to diversify the country’s tourism offering and reinforce Qatar’s position as a leading tourist destination.”

Making the last addition to its ever-growing network in Qatar for the year 2015, Al Meera Consumer Goods Company (Q.S.C) has announced the official opening of the Rawdat Ekdeem-Bani Hajer branch. The expansion caps a successful year for the national supermarket chain, marking its 10th branch opening in 2015 and closing a decade of Al Meera achievements and successes that have poured into customer and shareholder satisfaction.

Serving new areas in Qatar, the Rawdat Ekdeem-Bani Hajer branch opening - the 47th addition to the successful supermarket chain in the State of Qatar and the Sultanate of Oman - aligns with Al Meera’s strategic vision and expansion plans aimed at catering to underserved residential and commercial hubs across the Qatari territory. It also marks one of the largest branches to be launched by Al Meera this year, with the Rawdat Ekdeem supermarket area extending to 2,100 square meters and eight shops that will be offering various activities.

Dr. Mohammed Nasser Al Qahtani, DCEO of Al Meera, inaugurated the branch in presence of the company’s senior directors and managers. Commenting on the branch opening, Dr. Al Qahtani, said: “In 2015, as in our decade-long history, our expansion and network extension strategy has been focal and carefully designed to map out key Al Meera hubs across commercial and residential centers but also, untapped areas across the Qatari territory. Qatar continues to enjoy a growing population and economic development and, as such, we continue to work and expand in anticipation of, rather than in response to what’s to come in the future.”

Al Meera officially opens its 47th 2 [qatarisbooming.com].jpg

He added: “This ambitious and proactive strategy demands, of course, a great deal of in-depth understanding and insight into Qatar’s urban planning development challenges and opportunities. For this purpose, Al Meera continues to work in close cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning to ensure that its expansionary plans and strategy are at the service of Qatari consumers and communities.”

To this end, Al Meera’s focus has equally poured into renovating and redesigning several flagship and existing branches. Across its network, the supermarket chain has deployed world-class technologies and solutions, from topnotch storage to advanced lighting systems and has continuously evolved a seamless consumer journey across touch points. Adding Rawdat Ekdeem branch to its chain, Al Meera was able to successfully open 10 branches in 2015 as its stores are now present in Al Thumama, Al Wajba, Al Wakra 2, Jeryan Njeima, Thakira, Muraikh, Muaither, and Al Azizia, in addition to its operation in its leased branch at the Gulf Mall.

Al Meera officially opens its 47th 3 [qatarisbooming.com].jpg

Construction works have already started on many of these aforementioned locations. In parallel, Al Meera is also exploring future opportunities in new locations, such as Rawdat Al Hamam North, Al Sheehaniya North, Madkhal al Khuraib, Rawdat Rashed, Umm Al Umd, Al Khuraitiyat and others.

Al Meera recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, offering customers a Cash Back of 10 percent of their purchase value – with each customer receiving a QAR 50 purchase voucher on every purchase transaction of QAR 500 – during the period running from November 25, 2015 through to December 4, 2015. It is worth mentioning that Al Meera recorded in 2014 a net sales jump from QAR 507.9 million in 2006 to QAR 2.176 billion. Moreover, net shareholder return has raised nearly 10 times more from QAR 26.1 million in 2006 to QAR 226.6 million in 2014, with earnings per share jumping from QAR 2.61 in 2006 to QAR 11.33 in 2014.

Bricks and mortar retail in Qatar will survive only with digital customer experience revolution

$

In-store retailing has been under rising pressure from increased costs of doing business, as well as the growth of online shopping. Yet, bricks-and-mortar sales still accounts for the majority of retail spend. As per a recent report, according to a new publication from Hamburg-based yStats.com, Qatar had less than 20% of Internet users making purchases online, despite the fact that the majority of residents already have Internet access.

The country is still behind a number of other emerging economies in the ecommerce stakes due to factors such as delivery challenges, a preference for face-to-face, lack of choice due to limited range of online products and services, no price differential as compared to as compared to in-store purchases, consumer privacy concerns, prevalence of cash on delivery and others.

Jacob Chacko, Business Lead – SMB & Commercial, Middle East & Turkey at Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company believes that the retail model of the future will be a radically different experience from today, largely driven by the changing shopping demands of the younger hyper-connected consumer. Bricks-and-mortar retailing will remain to be a very significant part in retail, however the lines between channels will erode at the benefit of both the customer and the business. Advances in technology will significantly improve the relationships between retailers and customers, much the way analytics is already doing to online shopping.

Real opportunity lies in responding to this change, focusing on delivering a truly integrated and seamless omni-channel experience. The future of retail is an exciting one, and over the next few years we expect to see a number of key developments taking place in stores around the globe:

The emergence of the smart personal shopper

Online retail will continue to exist for customers who want to buy a specific product and have it delivered to their home. But those who enter a store do so to learn, to view and feel items and to speak to a person. As the physical environment of a store changes, communication barriers between customers and employees such as counters will be removed, enabling staff to provide a more personalised experience. Mobile technology will revolutionise the sales process and experience. Tomorrow’s retail staff will be unleashed from the sale counter, and given the equipment to connect with customers across the entire store, offering a more consultative approach. In fashion retail for example, assistants will be able to show customers a range of outfits and styles a particular item could work with.

With a real time view of stock and availability, they will be far more capable of closing sales, only recommending items that are both in stock and in size, whilst offering further choice and reducing wait time for shoppers.

The rise of immersive engagement

Walking past a store, a customer’s phone buzzes, offering them to try on the same pair of jeans they saved in their online basket a few days ago. Enticing them in, as they’ve already shopped online, for today only they will get an additional 10% off all purchases. Location-aware technology will identify customers’ mobile devices, enabling upsell and cross-sell offers based not just on what they’re viewing, but also what they’ve purchased before. As customers roam the store, engagement programmes will link with in-store beacons to dynamically offer up suggestions at various points along the store path.

Here, the loyalty programme and the new found freedom of the retail assistant will combine and, with a shared purchase history, the best retailers will enable assistants to make personal style recommendations, based on customer preference and items they may already own. Experiences will extend loyalty beyond purchases too, offering experience enhancements such as VIP parking spots when customers approach retail stores, and recognising regular customers on entry.

The end of cash and plastic

Part of matching the new connected consumers’ expectations will be delivering a seamless, frictionless payment experience, removing any barriers slowing down the speed of a retail sale. Eliminating queues from stores, roaming staff, now empowered by mobile technology will be able to transact with customers in seconds, as shoppers keep focus on the purchase experience rather than the cost. One of the most important factors to consumers, payment security requires additional compliance with higher security standards, ensuring consumers are protected from fraudulent activity and avoiding the irreparable reputational damage and financial costs associated with a breach in payment security for the retailer.

This adoption of mobile, digital payments will further enable retailers to offer things like on-demand delivery options, where products can be delivered straight to the customer’s home or even car. For retail businesses, this will also likely lead to higher revenues. Just as the shift from cash to plastic showed consumers are willing to spend more when not parting with cash, so too will sales be further strengthened by further dissociation from the traditional bank instrument - the card.

The road to the future

These hyper-connected consumers already in the marketplace have a rapidly growing share of spending power. This always-on generation demand things like fast internet access and a more seamless, digital experience they’re already getting from other services. While new innovations are being tested and tried in today’s market, much of this development is stifled by existing and fragmented existing IT infrastructure, negatively impacting the customer experience, and slowing the consumer adoption of new technologies that could help drive the retail business forward.

Because of this, retailers are already starting on the back foot. To build a successful platform for innovation across multiple channels, they must ensure the technological needs of today’s customers are fully met, otherwise they face being left in the dust. Focus on enriching the customer experience immediately, and set the stage for rapid innovation in the coming years.

QPMC inaugurates new stockpile and floating jetties Yamal 1 & Yamal 2

Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC) celebrated the inauguration of its new stockpile and floating jetties Yamal 1 and Yamal 2 at a ceremony held on site in Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC) under the high patronage of Prime Minister and Interior Minister HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani . Dignitaries in attendance at the ceremony included, Chairman of QPMC Engr. Abdulaziz Al Ansari, QPMC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Eng. Eisa Al Hammadi (pictured) and a number of Ministers, QPMC Board members and senior officials representing QPMC, Qatar Petroleum, Ras Laffan Industrial City and Nakilat the project’s main contractor in addition to local media representatives.

For his part Engr. Abdulaziz Al Ansari, QPMC Chairman stated, "The overall vision of HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, and support of HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, were invaluable as to the timely delivery of this project which will help fulfill the ambitious program outlined by the country’s wise leadership to complete many major infrastructure and construction plans as well as the development of transportation networks. Therefore, once this new facility boasting a total four floating jetties including the now serviceable Yamal 1 and 2, and the 1,800,000 square meter-stockyard; is fully operational in late 2016, the port’s capacity will increase gradually in tandem with the government’s need for material supply in the Northern areas of the country as a vital construction hub.”

Also commenting on this major milestone and focusing on the Ras Laffan port’s long term value, QPMC CEO Engr. Eisa Al Hammadi said, “Today’s strategic inauguration of QPMC’s state-of-the-art facility, equipment and mechanisms demonstrates QPMC’s alignment with Qatar’s shift towards value-added industries to which it is providing all support elements. QPMC is therefore accomplishing its role by minimizing cost and improving return for the benefit of stakeholders, both of which form an inherent part of QPMC’s and Qatar’s National Vision’s call for sustainable development.”

QPMC inaugurates new stockpile 2 [qatarisbooming.com].jpg

Al Hammadi futher stressed that QPMC is working to be a catalyst for change, by providing comprehensive services and encouraging private sector participation in various State projects, through mechanisms that allow private sector companies to contribute to developmental projects, while facilitating their access to primary materials with QPMC responsible of ensuring adequate import, transport, storage and delivery of materials as well stable prices for the benefit of the country’s vital construction sector . QPMC CEO Engineer Eisa Al Hamadi further commented, “He further commended the project’s main contractor Nakilat (N-Kom) for the delivery of this phase of this huge project within the deadline and allocated budget while complying fully with safety and security standards.”

It is worth mentioning that the completed first phase of the project consists of two floating docks Yamal 1 and Yamal 2 with total port receiving capacity of nine million tons a year. Serving as an offloading point for aggregates, the jetties will be in close proximity to the stockpile located in the industrial city within a distance of 28 kilometers. The port operates around the clock and boasts a gabbro and limestone storage area of 1,800,000 meters to feed governmental and non-governmental clients with primary materials that meet their requirements in terms of quantity, quality and specifications, all for a competitive price.

Considering that Qatar's construction sector boosts a diverse portfolio of infrastructure projects in the Northern part of the country, QPMC has set up the four floating jetties in Ras Laffan to supply the needed primary materials while reducing traffic congestion problems and the growing pressure on QPMC’s other facilities in the areas of Messaieed and Lusail which were designed specifically to fulfill Qatar’s Vision 2030 in its call to increase the country’s strategic stock of primary materials for the completion of major developmental projects. Hence,

QPMC inaugurates new stockpile 3 [qatarisbooming.com].jpg

QPMC will now be able to secure from its Ras Laffan port facility, primary materials with a potential volume throughput of nine million tons per year annually for the next five years. QPMC as the designated operator of this facility will use the floating jetties mainly for unloading its own aggregate barges and for stockpiling these strategic materials at its own stockyard through a truck and trailer operation with QPMC’s own transport fleet, via direct delivery to QPMC’s stockyard, within a distance of 28 kilometers inside Ras Laffan Industrial City.

QPMC as the owner and operator of the facility and related equipment and as the supplier, seller and distributor of the imported primary materials, has therefore competitive advantage allowing it to offer lower prices, sufficient quantities and superior quality to the local market. As part of its mandate to ensure that enough aggregate and construction material is on the ground to support government infrastructure development and other construction projects, QPMC is scheduled next to inaugurate its conveyor belt project and cement silos by late 2016, which will significantly reduce truck loading time and improve the cost efficiency and handling capacity of the Messaieed port significantly thanks to the conveyor belts and silos facilities. The high rate of discharge capacity from ships will also be reducing ships’ waiting time as the facility will operate round the clock.

Towards the end of the ceremony, Engr. Abdulaziz Al Ansari, QPMC Chairman presented the Prime Minister and Interior Minister HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani with a token of appreciation that was followed by a group photo with QPMC Chairman, QPMC CEO and QPMC Board Members.

Young, modern and deeply urban – such is Pull&Bear’s approach to the party season with its new Long Nights collection. The women’s collection get inspiration from two decades, the 70s and the 90s, which are keys to the current season and playfully use the female silhouette. Bright fabrics, with metal-looking fibre such as the ‘lamé’, stand out along with overlay details and cutout openings. Twin sets, palazzo dungarees and pleated dresses are some of the star garments within the capsule collection.

The men’s collection draws upon the brand’s contemporary, urban identity to provide a smart casual nighttime attitude. Prevailing colours range from black and navy blue to dark-grey and white, whereas materials such as cloth or cool wool give looks a warmer feel. Baggy trousers and fitted blazers underline the modern approach, but ties and bow ties are also available to finish off the look. Coats, leather jackets, shoes and sport shoes all contribute to the overall contemporary, fun aesthetics.

The editorial shooting by French photographer Fanny Latour-Lambert displays the key elements: bright fabrics and highlighted silhouettes for her; warm materials and casual attitude for him.

Paying Taxes Report: Qatar has the lowest company Tax rates

Qatar continues to provide one of the most favorable company tax environments in the world according to World Bank Group and PwC’s report, Paying Taxes 2016. The report, now in its 10th year, finds that on average, the model company in Qatar has a Total Tax Rate (as defined under the Doing Business methodology) of  11.3 percent of commercial profits making it the lowest tax rate in the world; it makes 4.0 tax payments per year and takes an average of 41 hours to comply.

In the Middle East the case study company outlined in the report has an average Total Tax Rate of 24.2 percent; it makes an average of 17.0 payments per year and it takes the company an average of 160 hours to comply with its tax affairs which is below the world average of 261 hours and the lowest across all global regions. Overall, Paying Taxes 2016, incorporating data on tax systems in 189 economies round the world, finds that on average, the model company has a Total Tax Rate of 40.8 percent of commercial profits, down by just 0.1 percentage point from last year. It makes 25.6 tax payments per year and takes 261 hours to comply with its tax requirements, a drop of 2 hours compared to last year.

According to the study, there was a small increase in the Total Tax Rate of 0.2 percentage points in the region from last year. The time to comply and the number of payments sub-indicators remained unchanged for the same period. In 2014, only two of the 13 Middle Eastern economies have a Total Tax Rate higher than the world average – Syria and Iran, with six of the economies having a Total Tax Rate higher than the regional average including Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Yemen.

Paying Taxes also finds that on average for companies around the world, labour taxes are a similar cost to profit taxes – with both labour taxes and profit taxes averaging 16.2% each of commercial profits worldwide, and four fifths of the taxes paid directly by businesses. Labour taxes and mandatory contributions paid by employers account for 59% of the average Total Tax Rate for the Middle East region and is the most significant contributor to the Total Tax Rate in most economies. Profit taxes account for 39% while other taxes account for just 2% of the region’s average Total Tax Rate.

Over a 10 year period covered by the study, the global average time to comply has declined by 61 hours and the number of payments sub-indicator by 8.2 payments, due in large to the introduction and improvement in electronic filing and payment systems. Electronic filing continues to have a significant impact in easing the burden of tax administration. Globally, the most common feature of tax reform in the past year was the introduction or enhancement of electronic systems for filing and paying taxes.

Economies, including Qatar’s, which have invested in online filing and payment infrastructure are reaping a digital dividend from these systems. Low income economies, however, which often have a substantial compliance burden, have shown the least reduction in the time to comply and the number of payments sub-indicators. This suggests that there are other challenges to be overcome in these economies, such as the availability of modern communications infrastructure, before the tax system can be substantially reformed. The study also discusses the benefits that good tax compliance systems can have in helping to reduce the size of the informal economy.

Dean Kern, Partner, PwC’s Middle East Markets, Tax and Legal Services Leader commenting on the Paying Taxes 2016 report said “There is still considerable scope for reform of tax systems in terms of simplification and supporting compliance. This year’s report demonstrates in particular the acute challenge in developing countries of the availability of IT infrastructure including broadband, needed to design and run a modern tax system to raise the revenues to sustain growth.”

Neil O’Brien, Head of Tax at PwC Qatar added “As far as Qatar is concerned there is an attractive tax regime here for business and individuals with a 10% Corporate Income Tax Rate, withholding taxes of 5 or 7%, no personal income taxes and no sales tax or VAT.” “Like many other buoyant economies, Qatar has invested in electronic filing as a way of improving its compliance process and it continues to look at new ways and incentives to attract Qatari entrepreneurs and foreign direct investments as a way of diversifying its economy.”

Commenting on the report Jeanine Daou, Partner and Middle East Leader for Indirect Taxes and Fiscal Policy said: “The Paying Taxes report helps inform the discussion around tax reform, a topic that is currently extremely relevant in the GCC. Governments will now need to make decisions concerning key elements in the system, including simplification of the compliance requirements through notably electronic filing and payment to ensure a smooth implementation.”

She added that, “A certain level of harmonization of the VAT systems across the GCC will be needed notably to avoid cases of double taxation of intra-GCC transactions and simplify compliance requirements for GCC companies.”
