Qatar prevails over UAE in trade dispute at WTO

The State of Qatar announced that its permanent mission to the World Trade Organization (WTO) has received a formal communication indicating that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had withdrawn its WTO dispute concerning certain alleged measures adopted by Qatar.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed in a statement that the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation released a statement confirming that the UAE formally backed down from their case.

The UAE’s failure in advancing this dispute against the State of Qatar demonstrates that the allegations made against Qatar were false and baseless, the statement said. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ statement underlined that the UAE’s decision to withdraw its complaint so soon after initiating this dispute confirms that Qatar has, and continues to, uphold and comply with its obligations under the WTO, adding “Evidently, the UAE had no arguments or evidence to show otherwise, as such, the UAE has formally withdrawn their complaint prior to the initiation of any adjudication by a WTO Panel”.

The statement further said that the State of Qatar has previously asserted that the inability of UAE goods to enter the Qatari market is due solely to the trade restrictive measures imposed by the UAE, which has in turn - led to the suffering of the UAE companies. The continued export of gas to the UAE is a clear example of how Qatar upholds and respects its international obligations, the Ministry has stressed. The statement asserted that the State of Qatar continues to pursue its own complaint against the UAE’s unlawful measures imposed on 5 June 2017, stressing that UAE must withdraw its illegal trade-restrictive measures.

It also pointed that a WTO panel is currently reviewing the claims brought by Qatar and will issue a binding report in due course. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed in its statement that the State of Qatar will spare no efforts in pursuing its legal rights, in all international fora, to ensure the withdrawal of the UAE’s unlawful measures against the State of Qatar, reiterating the State of Qatar’s commitment to comply fully with its WTO obligations and will continue to foster a stable and predictable trading environment for its economic partners around the world.

Cloud kitchens culture quickly expanding in Qatar’s F&B sector

$
0
0

They are called many things. From ‘dark kitchens’, to ‘cloud kitchens’ or ‘virtual kitchens’. They are restaurants with established kitchens, but operate without actual seating arrangements or dine-in options. They cater to their customers only through online food delivery apps. And with Qatar’s booming online food delivery market, cloud kitchen concepts are quickly expanding here.

Already, it is estimated that between five and 10 percent of the restaurants in Qatar are cloud kitchens, said Ahmad Baddoura, an expert in the field who launched Carriage Qatar in 2017.

Qatar’s thriving online food delivery market facilitates the growth of cloud kitchens in the country, Baddoura said in an interview with The Peninsula recently. With this new approach to restaurant concepts, entrepreneurs can save cost on operations and rental space. He added: “Qatar’s online food delivery market is now worth between QR1bn and QR1.5bn every year, compared to only about QR20m two years ago. It’s booming because it provides needed services that was never there before. And dark kitchens or cloud kitchens is something that is up and coming. There is also a tendency for certain delivery companies to provide the cloud kitchen. And that is something we are yet to see”.

Talabat Qatar’s Managing Director Francisco De Sousa added that the arrival of new restaurant concepts such as cloud kitchens in the Qatari market are a result of growth in the country’s F&B sector. “Qatar’s food delivery sector is quickly expanding to meet consumer demands. Today, the food delivery market is seeing a rise in cloud kitchen concepts. Restaurants are adopting this more cost-effect operational approach to maximise their reach and streamline their delivery processes, ensuring swift and quality service,” he added.

In its 2019 quarterly report, leading real estate advisor DTZ Qatar said that Qatar’s F&B sector has recently been boosted by the increasing popularity of home-delivery apps such as Carriage and Talabat. “The consumer behaviour and restaurant behaviour is changing. Service offering is also evolving, and that has affected how we spend and how we perceive food delivery. Online food delivery is impacting Qatar’s F&B market, and it is also affecting where restaurants are picking their next branch locations. Restaurants are now capitalising on the delivery business,” added Baddoura.

According to a study conducted by the Qatar Development Bank (QDB), the total revenue of F&B outlets in Qatar is estimated to increase to QR14.26bn in 2026 from QR6.99bn in 2016, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.4 percent. This growth is largely in line with the projected growth of the population and annual increase in tourist arrivals during this period. The report also said that casual dining restaurants which comprise the largest proportion of the F&B market in Qatar (with 795 casual dining outlets) or 27 percent of the total F&B outlets here, is estimated to be valued at QR5.44bn in 2026 growing from QR2.67bn in 2016 (38.2 percent share of total F&B revenue).

The free-of-charge shows help in increasing footfall in malls during the summer season. The spectacular stage productions of well-loved children’s tales as well as cartoon characters and superheroes in colourful costumes captivate thousands of people in malls this week.

The rags to riches story of Cinderella and her glass slipper entertain young audiences at Hyatt Plaza Mall as Cinderella, Prince Charming and the wicked step sisters interact with children at the show. “All my kids were happy watching this show because they had the chance to see the story come to life.  I want to thank the organisers for giving another fun-filled Eid programme worth watching,” said Althea, a mother of three children who came to see the show yesterday. Children still have the chance to watch Cinderella Story today  with three shows at 5pm, 8pm and 10pm.

Lagoona Mall, on the other hand, brought underwater wonder to the children with the production of “The Little Mermaid” which combined beautiful music, spellbinding acrobatics, stunning costumes, video projection and stage design in one fantastic show. “It is totally entertaining for children and adults as well because it has many elements that appeal to different ages. Like other shows staged in Lagoona Mall, this show didn’t disappoint,” said Hamza, one of the audience members. “The Little Mermaid” will have its final performances today at 3.30pm, 6.30pm, and 9.30pm at Lagoona Mall’s North Court Lobby.

Sea creatures and The Avengers characters in complete costumes also bring smile to children’s faces as they visit Summer in Qatar participating malls for some interaction and picture taking with their young fans. “For children to watch their favourite superheroes onscreen is entertaining but to see them in person is an absolute delight that’s why we brought them here to have their photos taken which they will remember for a long time,” said Grace, a mother of two children who visited Al Mirqab Mall yesterday.

Yesterday marked Al Mirqab Mall’s final Carnival show, which is its main entertainment offering this Eid Al Adha featuring authentic carnival performers such as Coco the Clown and a fire show. The Oasis Stage at Mall of Qatar also witnesses hundreds of people mostly families watching Nickelodeon’s PAW Patrol’s Chase and Marshall, Shimmer and Shine, Dora The Explorer and SpongeBob in a show dubbed ‘the best dance party ever.’ Nickelodeon Rocks show continues to enthrall audiences today and tomorrow at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm.

The joint venture is formed to support the execution of the drilling contracts which have been awarded to GDI, a release issued by GIS said.

GDI has no required capital contribution to the joint venture. GDI will be subcontracted by the joint venture to mobilise and manage the rigs to meet the requirements of the drilling contracts. The joint venture will source rigs directly from Seadrill, and any additional rigs required will be sourced from an unrelated third-party shipyard.

The firm terms of the well-based contracts will commence in 2020 with initial terms concluding in 2023 and 2024 and an estimated total contract value (including mobilisation income) of QR 2.39bn. The contracts include single well-based options which could add up to an estimated 13.7 cumulative years of term and an additional contract value of QR 2.55bn. The options could be exercised only if the contractual stipulations are realised prior to the end of the firm contracts period. If the options are exercised by the customer at a later date, GIS will announce the award of the options accordingly.

William Ceppi, GDI's Chief Executive Officer, stated: “We are pleased with the continued collaboration with our joint venture partner. We look forward to working closely with all stakeholders on this significant project and we remain honoured to be entrusted to continue our safe and efficient operations for Qatar Petroleum.” The joint venture comes in line with GIS's strategy to capture new business opportunities that would potentially help increase revenues and ultimately maximise shareholder value.

The biggest Central Market will open soon for business in Al Sailiya. The new facility have different sections for fish, poultry, fruits and vegetables and an abattoir for camels, cows and sheep  under one roof.

“The Al Sailiya Central Market was expected to open in the first quarter of this year, but owing to some expansion works and special procedures the opening was delayed. But it  will open  for business after two months maximum,” said an official source at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment. He also pointed out that the opening of the market was postponed several times and  as every preparation is complete, it is ready for business.

The market serves Al Rayan, Abu Hamour and Al Sailiya. The abattoir is equipped with most modern machinery and it is built according to specifications required by modern standards. It has dedicated areas to sell all kinds of foodstuff such as fruits, vegetables, poultry, he said. About the existing abattoirs in Al Rayan, he said: “For a long time we have been asking authorities concerned to develop them, because they are very small and do not have waiting area for people, especially on special occasions such as  Eid Al Adha, Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr.

In a previous statement to The Peninsula, he said that  on occasion such as Eid and Ramadan, customers had to wait hours for the slaughtered animal to be ready, and the new abattoir in the central market in Al Sailiya will solve these problems which are pushing many customers to slaughter their animals at homes to avoid long queues.” So the opening of the new Central Market will serve people from many nearby areas and will end their suffering, because the market satisfies their need for fish, vegetables, fruit and meat as they can get all these at one place, he stressed.

The central market is built on a total area  of  12,000 square metres, and includes three buildings, each one consisting two floors. The main building accommodates different shops for fruits, vegetables, fish, and others. There is also an administration building. The abattoir for camels, cows and sheep is in the third building.
