Thailand’s hospitality major enters Qatar

Qatar’s robust hospitality sector continues to attract global hospitality players. Dusit International, a Thailand-based global hospitality company, has signed a management agreement with the Al Majed Group to operate Dusit Doha Hotel.

The five-star hotel, which will be located in the West Bay area, is expected to open in the fourth quarter of this year, said the company in a statement posted on its website. The 357-key hotel, will comprise 261 guest rooms and suites, along with 96 hotel apartments. Entry of Dusit International forms a part is in line with the eagerness of global players who wants to be part of Qatar’s growth story. Several reports have shown that many hotels are set to open in Qatar in the next two-three years.

“There are currently in the region of 17,000 hotel keys and serviced apartments at various stages of planning and construction in Qatar, with the majority expected to be delivered to 4-star or 5-star specifications,” noted the quarterly report by real estate consultancy firm DTZ Qatar, released early this year. The total number of hotel and hotel apartment developments currently operating in Qatar was officially recorded at 122 in Qatar Tourism Authority’s end of year report for 2017. These properties provide a total of 25,167 keys, including hotel rooms suites and hotel apartments.

“Qatar is set to host two of the world’s largest sporting events: the FIFA World Cup 2022 – in which the country is expecting to host more than one million international visitors for the World Cup itself and the World Athletic Championship in 2019 which serves as a right time for us to open Dusit Doha Hotel to welcome the organisers, sponsors, and consultants who will be making Doha their home for the next few years,” said Ahmed Mahdi Al Majed, Al Majed Group. “Dusit – being the first 5-star hotel in Qatar with Thai culture and heritage, would enable the vast Thai experience to the valuable customers,” he added.

Dusit International has 27 properties currently in operation across four brands in eight countries. “It’s an exciting time for Qatar and we are delighted to announce the Dusit Doha Hotel, our second property with the Al Majed Group. The hotel will be designed keeping in mind the latest developments in the vibrant city, to resonate with both business and leisure travelers alike,” said Suphajee Suthumpun, Group CEO, Dusit International.

Qatar’s tourism sector is set to grow further helped by the measures by concerned authorities. QTA had, last year, released its National Tourism Strategy, which set out targets for 2023. Targets include boosting occupancy rates to 72 percent across the sector, and doubling tourist arrivals to 5.6 million.
